Alejandro Toledo seeks humanitarian pardon over severe health decline

Former Peruvian president Alejandro Toledo, age 80, is requesting a humanitarian pardon as he suffers serious health problems while serving prison sentences for bribery and money‑laundering linked to the Odebrecht scandal. His wife, former first lady Eliane Karp, earlier appealed for clemency, urging the incoming president Keiko Fujimori to grant humanitarian consideration.

Toledo’s lawyer, Carlos Torres Caro, confirmed that a written request was filed on 24 June citing Peru’s Law 32181, which allows inmates over 80 with medical justification to serve their sentences at home. Medical reports detail cardiac, urological, cognitive decline and depression. The request now awaits a ruling from the Supreme Court’s Permanent Criminal Chamber.

Toledo remains confined in Barbadillo prison, a facility designated for former heads of state, alongside other ex‑presidents.
