Humanitarian pardon sought for former Peruvian president Alejandro Toledo

Eliane Karp, the former first lady of Peru, publicly appealed for a humanitarian pardon for her husband, ex‑president Alejandro Toledo, who is serving a 20‑year prison term for corruption linked to the Odebrecht scandal. Karp, speaking from Israel, urged the incoming president—currently favored Keiko Fujimori in the 2026 election—to grant clemency, citing Toledo’s severe health problems, including prostate cancer and risks of stroke and heart attack.

Luis Galarreta, secretary‑general of the Fuerza Popular party, echoed the call, stating that no inmate should die in prison when genuine medical reasons exist, and mentioned the possibility of similar humanitarian relief for former president Pedro Castillo. He referenced previous humanitarian considerations granted to Alberto Fujimori.
