Alek Minassian drops appeal of Toronto van attack convictions

Alek Minassian, convicted for the 2018 Toronto van attack, has abandoned his appeal against his convictions. Ontario’s top court confirmed that Minassian is no longer challenging his convictions on 10 counts of first-degree murder and 16 counts of attempted murder.

On April 23, 2018, Minassian drove a rented van into a crowded sidewalk, killing ten people and injuring others. The victims included Ji Hun Kim, So He Chung, Anne Marie D’Amico, Andrea Bradden, Chul Min “Eddie” Kang, Renuka Amarasingha, Dorothy Sewell, Geraldine Brady, Munir Najjar, and Mary Elizabeth “Betty” Forsyth. Another victim, Amaresh Tesfamariam, died in 2021 from injuries sustained during the attack.

Minassian was sentenced to life in prison with no possibility of parole for 25 years, plus 20 years for 15 counts of attempted murder to be served concurrently. During his trial, Minassian argued he should be found not criminally responsible due to autism spectrum disorder, but the court rejected this defense, with prosecutors maintaining he understood the nature of his actions.
