Alexander Kuzmenko dies after bear attack in Siberia

Alexander Kuzmenko, a respected Russian hockey coach and father of NHL player Andrei Kuzmenko, has died following a bear attack in the Republic of Tuva, Siberia. The incident occurred on September 23 during a fishing trip on the Bolshoy Yenisei River.

Reports indicate the group was in a forested area where access had been restricted due to increased bear activity. During the encounter, a bear attacked the 62-year-old, causing severe injuries to his face and head. Despite efforts by his companions to drive the animal away and provide first aid, and a subsequent helicopter transport to an intensive care unit in Kyzyl, he succumbed to his injuries.

The Pittsburgh Penguins organization expressed deep sadness regarding the loss. Andrei Kuzmenko, who recently signed a $5 million contract with the team, has taken a leave of absence to travel to Russia to be with his family. Penguins General Manager Kyle Dubas requested privacy for the family during this difficult time.
