Aleksandar Nikolov gesture sparks controversy at European Volleyball Championship
Controversy has emerged following a gesture made by Bulgarian volleyball player Aleksandar Nikolov during the European Men's Volleyball Championship match against Poland. During the tie-break of a match that Bulgaria won 3:2, Nikolov performed a throat-cutting gesture toward his teammates after scoring a point.
Nikolov released a statement claiming the gesture was not intended to be malicious but was an expression of intense emotion. Polish player Bartłomiej Bołądź noted that such incidents are not unprecedented and urged against turning volleyball into a psychological game, stating, “We are not robots.”
Former player Krzysztof Ignaczak suggested the incident could serve as additional motivation for the Polish team if they face Bulgaria again in the tournament. While acknowledging the gesture was inappropriate, Ignaczak attributed it to the temperament of young players and suggested it could act as a catalyst for the Polish squad to respond on the court.
