According to reports, Vučić allegedly pressured officials to remove the site's protected status, reportedly telling heritage experts they were ‘lazy and incompetent’ and suggesting they resign if they did not comply. While high-ranking officials, including the Minister of Culture, have faced indictments for abuse of office related to the project, the investigation claims a specific meeting held by Vučić regarding this matter was omitted from the official indictments.

In response to the legal proceedings, Vučić has dismissed the prosecutors as ‘corrupt gangs’ and claimed the country has lost an ‘exceptional investment.’ Representatives for the Trump Organization and Jared Kushner have denied involvement in any illegal efforts to strip the site of its protected status, and Kushner’s company has stated that the project will not be realized at this time.
