Aleksandar Vučić to Resign and May Seek Prime Minister Post

Serbian President Aleksandar Vučić said he will soon submit his resignation and is weighing a candidacy for the premiership. His second presidential term ends in May 2025 and the constitution bars a third term, prompting him to consider a shift to the government’s top executive role. Vučić told Radio Belgrade that he could resign “maybe even earlier” and added, “I will not tell the people that I shortened the term, but ‘I submitted my resignation.’” He indicated that elections are expected in three to four months, describing the timing as a technical matter.

The monarchist group Monarhisti – Movement for the Kingdom of Serbia urged Vučić to clarify his intentions, demanding that if he truly wants to become prime minister he should first call extraordinary parliamentary elections to obtain a clear democratic mandate. They argue the current National Assembly lacks legitimacy and that a fresh electoral vote is needed for any new government formation.
