Aleksandar Vučić's remarks spark church‑state tension in Montenegro

Serbian President Aleksandar Vučić publicly emphasized the importance of the Serbian Orthodox Church’s unity, referencing the 2020 litije in Montenegro and portraying his comments as a defence of historical truth. The Metropolitanate of Montenegro and the Littoral (MCP) responded, stating that political interpretations of church matters are unacceptable and damage the unity of the Church and the people.

In contrast, the Budimlja‑Nikšić eparchy issued a statement praising Vučić’s emphasis on preserving church unity, describing his remarks as an “exceptional contribution to safeguarding truth” and rejecting accusations of political interference. The exchange underscores ongoing tensions between Serbian political leadership and Montenegrin religious institutions.
