Aleksander Barkov placed on LTIR with leg injury
Florida Panthers captain Aleksander Barkov has been placed on long-term injured reserve (LTIR) following a lower-body injury sustained during a game against the San Jose Sharks. The injury occurred when Barkov’s left leg gave out during a battle for the puck near the boards, causing him to fall awkwardly.
Barkov is expected to miss a minimum of 10 games and 24 days, though the exact severity of the injury is still being evaluated by team physicians. While the injury is to his left knee, head coach Paul Maurice noted it is unrelated to the right knee injury that sidelined him for the entire previous season. There is reported optimism that the injury may not be season-ending, but a definitive timeline remains undetermined.
The roster move provides the Panthers with approximately $4 million in salary cap relief, allowing the team to recall Sam Lafferty and defenseman Alexander Petrovic from the AHL Charlotte Checkers. To fill the void in the lineup, the team has utilized Lars Eller in a top-line role.
