Aleksos Kalivis, prominent Greek labor leader, dies at 73

Aleksos Kalivis, a prominent figure in the Greek labor movement and the political Left, has passed away at the age of 73. Born in Athens in 1953, Kalivis had a long career in trade unionism and politics.

He began his union activity at the National Bank of Greece in 1978, later serving as General Secretary of SYETE (1983–1987) and General Secretary of OTOE (1991–1994). He held significant leadership roles within the General Confederation of Greek Workers (GSEE), serving on its executive committee and as Vice President until 2009.

Politically, Kalivis was a founding member of Synaspismos in 1991 and later a member of SYRIZA. He was also an active participant in anti-globalization movements and served as a founding member of the Greek and European Social Forums. The GSEE expressed deep emotion in honoring him as a dedicated servant of the labor movement.
