Alena Mess releases guide to combat youth cyberbullying
Social pedagogue and prevention expert Alena Mess has released a new book, ‘Hass, Druck, Gruppenchat. Wie du dein Kind bei Cybermobbing schützt und stärkst‘, to address the rising issue of cyberbullying among youth.
Mess highlights that digital platforms, such as TikTok and private group chats, have removed the traditional safe havens for victims. Unlike physical bullying, which often ends after school hours, digital harassment can occur continuously. She notes that young people frequently use emojis with coded, derogatory meanings that may appear harmless to adults, such as using specific animal or nature icons to insult others.
Mess, who serves as an expert for family courts and works with police on issues regarding sexualized violence and child exploitation, emphasizes that this type of bullying significantly impacts a child's self-esteem and sense of belonging.
