Portugal upgrades Alentejo railway line with €270 million project

Portugal is modernising a 35‑kilometre stretch of the Alentejo railway line between Poceirão and Bombel. The project, funded with €270 million, will duplicate the track and upgrade infrastructure to allow speeds of up to 200 km/h for conventional passenger trains and 220 km/h for pendular services. Work includes new signalling, catenary replacement, station remodels at Bombel, Pegões and Poceirão, and the construction of a technical station at Águas de Moura‑Sul.

The upgrade aims to remove capacity constraints, shorten travel times on national and international routes, and boost freight traffic by about 20 % by 2030. It is expected to benefit the municipalities of Vendas Novas, Montijo and Palmela, enhancing regional connectivity and supporting economic activity in the Alentejo region.
