Alentejo Regional Orchestra initiative moves forward in Portugal

The University of Évora is preparing a joint candidature to lead the creation of the Alentejo Regional Orchestra, aiming to build a permanent orchestral ensemble for the Alentejo region. Vice‑Rector for Culture and Society Antonio Sáez Delgado highlighted strong interest from multiple municipalities and cultural associations, and the university plans to request an extension of the September 9 deadline for submissions.

Culture Minister Margarida Balseiro Lopes announced the government’s support, noting the new orchestra will fill a cultural gap, generate qualified employment and foster collaboration across municipalities and beyond Portugal’s borders. The competition provides €1.62 million in funding, complemented by an additional €190 000 from the Cultural Promotion Fund for the orchestra’s installation, on top of the €810 000 annual allocation given to existing regional orchestras.
