Alentejo tourism: exploring Marvão, Castelo de Vide, and Alcácer do Sal
The Alentejo region of Portugal offers diverse historical and natural landscapes through its unique towns and ecosystems.
In the Serra de São Mamede, the hilltop village of Marvão sits at 860 meters altitude, featuring medieval walls and a castle with views extending toward Spain and the Serra da Estrela. Nearby, Castelo de Vide offers a more walkable experience, characterized by its well-preserved medieval Jewish quarter and a 14th-century synagogue.
Further south, Alcácer do Sal provides a different historical perspective, with an archaeological crypt revealing layers of Phoenician, Roman, Arab, and Christian civilizations. The town is situated along the Sado River, which is surrounded by rice fields that serve as significant sites for birdwatching. The local gastronomy is heavily centered on rice varieties and regional products like eel and pine nuts.
