Alerj hosts debate on gender bias in evaluating women leaders
The Escola do Legislativo of the Rio de Janeiro State Assembly (Alerj) will hold a public debate on 11 August titled “A mulher é mais emocional… ou apenas mais julgada?”. The session is led by federal judge and researcher Alessandra Belfort Bueno, who will examine how cognitive biases and gender stereotypes influence the assessment of women in leadership roles.
Belfort Bueno explains that the common belief that women are inherently more emotional and therefore less rational is not supported by objective data; it stems from unconscious heuristics and social expectations. The talk will explore how these biases affect decision‑making in institutional contexts and aim to promote more impartial evaluations, fairer professional environments, and criteria‑based judgments rather than stereotypes.
