Alerta flequillo: haircut trend becomes feminist reclamation

The term ‘alerta flequillo’ (bangs alert) has evolved from a sexist insult used in online harassment to a symbol of feminist reclamation. The phenomenon targets women with short bangs that expose the eyebrows, a style seen as challenging normative femininity and traditional standards of docility.

Digital creators and professionals, such as designer Virginia Mendoza and hairdresser Inma T., have reported facing intense online harassment from ‘incels’, misogynists, and fascists after participating in social media trends related to the haircut. This targeting is viewed by feminist researchers as a form of gender surveillance intended to discipline women’s appearances.

This trend emerges alongside the rise of ‘clean girl’ and ‘tradwife’ aesthetics on social media, which promote more conventional and polished looks. The phenomenon highlights a growing tension between traditional gender expectations and digital subcultures, linking aesthetic choices to broader movements within the international ‘manosphere’ spanning from Spain to Argentina.
