Alessandra Rojo de la Vega faces removal bid, statue swap debate in Mexico City

Mexico City legislators have introduced a point of agreement to create a special commission that would investigate Cuauhtémoc borough mayor Alessandra Rojo de la Vega’s alleged involvement in a recent protest, a step that could lead to her removal from office. Rojo denounces the move as a “political trial without evidence,” noting that no formal complaint or investigative file exists in the capital’s prosecutor’s office.

In a separate initiative, Rojo proposed to the city’s head of government, Clara Brugada, that the recently removed statues of Fidel Castro and Che Guevara be exchanged for a monument honoring the “mothers searchers.” She argued that public resources should prioritize essential services, stating, “Los recursos públicos deberían usarse para atender las necesidades de la gente: mejorar las calles, acabar con los baches, invertir al sistema de drenajes.” The mayor’s dual focus on defending her position and redirecting symbolic projects underscores a broader clash over political symbolism and municipal budgeting in Mexico City.
