Alessandria Mayor protests transfer of 41-bis prisoners to San Michele prison

Transfer operations for inmates under the 41-bis regime have begun at the San Michele prison in Alessandria. Giorgio Abonante, the Mayor of Alessandria, has strongly criticized the move, labeling it an “insensate operation” and a decision made by the Government without adequate preparation for the local community.

Abonante claims the arrival of these high-security prisoners is undermining decades of established educational, training, and professional programs. He expressed concern that forty years of successful rehabilitation work and social reintegration efforts involving various associations are being jeopardized.

The Mayor also criticized local representatives of the governing coalition for their silence on the matter. He contrasted the situation in Alessandria with Sardinia, noting that in the latter, political leaders across various parties actively fought against similar government decisions regarding the transfer of 41-bis detainees.
