Alessandro Di Battista recovers after emergency surgery in Cuba

Former Italian parliamentarian Alessandro Di Battista has shared details regarding a life-saving emergency surgery he underwent in Cuba. While in the country for a journalistic reportage on the effects of the energy blockade, Di Battista suffered from cerebral edema caused by a brain tumor.

Di Battista reported that despite severe resource shortages at the hospital—including lack of fuel, electricity, and water, as well as difficulties in sterilizing surgical instruments—Cuban doctors successfully performed the operation. He described the impact of the United States embargo on the island as a ‘medieval siege’ that creates extreme hardships for the population and the healthcare system.

In a recent television appearance, Di Battista stated he is recovering well and has begun treatment. He expressed optimism regarding his medical prognosis, noting that doctors have indicated a concrete possibility of success with his ongoing care.
