Alessandro Michieletto Says Volleyball Should Stay Apart from Politics as Russia Returns

The International Volleyball Federation (FIVB) announced in early July that Russia will be readmitted to international competition, following a temporary suspension after the invasion of Ukraine. Italian star Alessandro Michieletto, a leading figure of Italy’s men’s national team, responded in an interview with La Gazzetta dello Sport, stating that “volleyball has little to do with war” and that it is “good to play against strong teams, and Russia will certainly be one of them.” He said he does not wish to enter political debate but emphasized the sport’s focus on competition.

Michieletto’s comments echo a broader controversy within the volleyball community. The president of the Polish Volleyball Federation and the head of the Italian federation have expressed opposition to the decision, arguing that reinstating Russia could be seen as overlooking the conflict. The remarks come as the sport prepares for next year’s World Championships in Poland, where Russia could potentially take part. Italy, meanwhile, exited the Nations League at the quarter‑final stage after a 0‑3 loss to the United States.
