Alessandro Serra directs Pasolini play in Udine

The national premiere of Alessandro Serra’s production of ‘I Turcs tal Friul’ took place at the Teatro Nuovo Giovanni da Udine. The play is based on a 1944 work by Pier Paolo Pasolini, which was originally performed at the Venice Biennale in 1976.

Set in 1499 during the Turkish invasion of Friuli, the tragedy utilizes the Friulian language and a classical choral structure. Director Alessandro Serra described his approach as a deep respect for the text, aiming to create a non-linear, metaphysical dimension through scenography, light, and sound. The production explores themes of fear, historical violence, and loss, while positioning theatre as a ritualistic space for dignity.
