Aletsch Glacier shows significant retreat in the Swiss Alps
The Great Aletsch Glacier, the longest glacier in the Alps and a UNESCO World Heritage site, is experiencing a significant and visible retreat. Spanning 20 kilometers in length, 800 meters in depth, and covering 79 square kilometers, the glacier holds approximately 160 million cubic meters of ice.
Local tourism officials, including Jasmine Noti of the Aletsch Arena region, have noted that the glacier's end, which was once invisible from viewpoints like Eggishorn 25 years ago, is now clearly visible due to its continuous recession. This melting process highlights the critical role glaciers play in planetary health and the environmental changes affecting the Swiss Alps.
