Alex Ammendolia, union activist, dies after insect sting in Cuneo mountains
Alex Ammendolia, a 38-year-old union activist, died following an anaphylactic shock after being stung by an insect, likely a wasp or bee, while hiking in the Cuneo mountains on August 30, 2026. Despite rescue efforts, he lost consciousness and passed away.
Ammendolia was a prominent member of the CUB Sanità union in Turin, where he advocated for healthcare workers' rights. Originally from Saint-Marcel in Valle d'Aosta, he had previously served as a local city councilor. Beyond labor rights, he was known for his social activism, collaborating with the Babel cooperative to support migrant rights and expressing support for the Palestinian cause.
The CUB Sanità National Directorate expressed deep grief, describing him as a colleague who stood out for his generosity, human sensitivity, and constant attention to social justice. A civil funeral is scheduled for September 2 in Saint-Marcel.
