Alex Baena praises Lamine Yamal after strong World Cup showing

Alex Baena said his first season with Atlético Madrid was difficult because of injuries, but the World Cup gave him a second chance. He highlighted his role in Spain’s win over Uruguay in Guadalajara and recalled a missed opportunity against Portugal when Diogo Costa saved a close‑range effort.

Now a regular starter, Baena works alongside Nico Williams on the left flank and watches Lamine Yamal on the right. He noted, “Quan Lamine Yamal abaixa el nivell, rep molta canya,” adding that the teenager is “the best player in the world” and receives heavy criticism when his level drops. Baena also expressed admiration for Lionel Messi, saying it would be a dream to face him on the pitch.

Baena emphasized the personal intensity of the tournament, stating, “Ho visc tot molt intensament i, quan les coses van malament, m’ho prenc d’una manera molt personal. Ser aquí amb la selecció em salva.”
