Alex Cora declines Philadelphia Phillies managerial role for 2027
Alex Cora has reportedly declined the opportunity to become the manager of the Philadelphia Phillies for the 2027 season. According to reports from USA Today, Cora informed Phillies president of baseball operations Dave Dombrowski that he intends to take the 2027 season off.
Cora, who was fired by the Boston Red Sox in April 2026 following a 10-17 start to the season, remains under contract with Boston and is due to receive $7.25 million in 2027. He previously declined a managerial offer from Philadelphia in April to spend time with family in Puerto Rico.
The Phillies are currently evaluating their managerial future. Don Mattingly, who served as the interim manager for the remainder of the 2026 season after Rob Thomson was dismissed, led the team to a playoff berth and an 88-74 record. Mattingly remains under contract as a bench coach through next year.
