Alex Eala chooses Philippines for Asian Games despite WTA conflict
Filipino tennis player Alex Eala has decided to represent the Philippines at the 2026 Asian Games in Aichi-Nagoya, Japan, despite potential professional consequences. The decision follows a career-defining period for Eala, which included reaching the second week of Wimbledon, defeating defending champion Iga Swiatek, and climbing into the world’s top 20.
However, the choice has created a scheduling conflict with the WTA 1000 China Open, which runs from September 30 to October 11, overlapping with the Asian Games. The Philippine Tennis Association has requested an exemption from the WTA to allow Eala to compete in Japan. If the exemption is denied, Eala faces a reported $10,000 fine and a zero-point penalty for 52 weeks.
Fans have expressed frustration regarding the WTA’s potential refusal to grant the exemption, citing concerns over the organization's support for players and the growth of the sport in Asia.
