Alexandra Eala falls to Belinda Bencic at National Bank Open
Filipino tennis star Alexandra Eala saw her impressive run at the National Bank Open in Toronto come to an end following a 6-4, 6-0 defeat against Switzerland’s Belinda Bencic in the round of 16. Eala, who recently became the first Filipina to win a WTA Tour-level singles title at the Mubadala DC Open, had reached the fourth round in Toronto after overcoming opponents such as Caty McNally despite a minor ankle sprain.
Bencic, a former world No. 4 and Olympic gold medalist, delivered a dominant performance to secure her place in the quarterfinals. The match concluded a week of significant attention for Eala, who drew massive support from the local Filipino community in Canada.
Following her exit, Eala expressed a need for rest and personal time before continuing her North American hard-court swing. She is scheduled to compete in the Cincinnati Open as the 17th seed, followed by the US Open.
