Alex Eala wins WTA fan-voted award amid controversy

Alex Eala has won the WTA ‘Star of the Hard Court Swing’ award following a fan vote, securing 78% of the total votes. The 21-year-old Filipina outperformed World No. 1 Elena Rybakina, who received 16%, and former No. 1 Iga Swiatek, who received 3%.

The result has sparked significant controversy within the tennis community. Critics have labeled the fan-voted award a ‘popularity contest,’ pointing to Eala’s recent second-round loss in Singapore to world No. 180 Tatiana Prozorova. Supporters of Rybakina, who recently won the US Open while managing an Achilles injury, expressed frustration on social media, questioning the legitimacy of the award given the disparity between fan votes and professional achievements.

Despite the backlash, defenders of the process note that the voting system is open to fans globally and that Eala’s supporters acted legitimately. Eala, who previously won the grass court swing award, is now shifting her focus toward the Asian Games in Nagoya.
