Journalist Alex Escobar has revealed he was diagnosed with myasthenia gravis, a rare autoimmune disease, after experiencing speech difficulties during a live broadcast in the United States. The incident occurred during his coverage of the World Cup in New Jersey, where he struggled to articulate words, prompting immediate medical concern.
Following the live episode, medical investigations in the U.S. and Brazil led to the discovery of a benign tumor in his thymus. Escobar underwent surgery in Rio de Janeiro to remove the mass. He noted that the diagnosis was life-saving, stating, “I was saved by the gong, and the gong is called myasthenia,” as doctors warned that the undetected tumor could have led to fatal complications like a heart attack.
