Alex Fiorio, WRC Group N champion, dies at 61
Alex Fiorio, a prominent Italian rally driver and 1987 WRC Group N World Champion, has died at the age of 61. He passed away in Ceglie Messapica following a battle with stomach cancer, a condition he had publicly disclosed earlier this year.
The son of legendary Lancia and Ferrari sporting director Cesare Fiorio, Alex established a significant independent career in motorsport. He was a key figure during the golden era of the Lancia Delta, achieving nine WRC podiums, including a second-place finish in the 1989 championship behind Miki Biasion.
Beyond his driving career, Fiorio served as a team manager for Honda Benetton Playlife Racing in MotoGP and the BMW Cibiemme Team. In his later years, he remained active in the community through the Fiorio Cup and as a motorsport commentator on social media.
