Alex Gibney documentary on Elon Musk ends theatrical run after two weeks

The documentary ‘Musk’, directed by Alex Gibney, has reportedly ended its theatrical run after only two weeks. Despite receiving critical praise on the festival circuit, the film’s wider release was described as a box office failure, earning a total of approximately $571,902.

The film initially opened in four theaters in New York and Los Angeles on October 9, before expanding to 472 screens. However, the second weekend saw a significant drop, netting only $290,000 with an average of $614 per screen.

The film's release was marked by tension; Elon Musk publicly criticized Gibney, and Musk’s attorney, Alex Spiro, issued a formal legal notice to the production team prior to the release. Additionally, TikTok briefly disabled the documentary’s advertising account, citing policies regarding ‘political content’, though access was restored within 48 hours. The film is now available via streaming services including Prime Video and Fandango.
