Alex Jones: Texas appeals court reduces $50M Sandy Hook judgment

A Texas appeals court has significantly reduced a $50 million judgment against conspiracy theorist Alex Jones. The Texas Third Court of Appeals ruled that the award must comply with state laws limiting punitive damages, slashing the punitive portion from over $40 million to $1.5 million. This leaves approximately $6 million in total damages remaining, including more than $4.1 million in compensatory damages awarded to Sandy Hook parents Neil Heslin and Scarlett Lewis.

Despite the reduction, the court upheld the original finding of defamation against Jones regarding his false claims that the 2012 Sandy Hook Elementary School massacre was a hoax. Jones, who has left his Infowars platform and filed for bankruptcy through his company Free Speech Systems, called the ruling a “gigantic victory for the First Amendment” and intends to appeal to the state Supreme Court.

This ruling is separate from a $1.25 billion defamation judgment Jones faces in Connecticut. To date, the families of the Sandy Hook victims have not collected any funds from Jones.
