Alex Murdaugh murder retrial moved out of Colleton County
Judge Debra McCaslin has ruled that the murder retrial for Alex Murdaugh must be moved out of Colleton County, South Carolina. The decision follows a South Carolina Supreme Court ruling that overturned Murdaugh's 2023 convictions after finding that former Colleton County Clerk of Court Becky Hill improperly influenced the jury.
While the new venue has not yet been determined, McCaslin ruled that the trial cannot take place anywhere within the 14th Judicial Circuit. The defense has advocated for the trial to be held in Charleston, though prosecutors have raised concerns regarding the potential financial burden on the state.
During a recent hearing, the judge also ruled that Murdaugh's testimony from his initial trial may be used in the retrial under specific conditions. Additionally, Murdaugh was permitted to appear in civilian clothing rather than a prison jumpsuit. The retrial is currently scheduled to begin on April 5, 2027.
Other legal motions remain pending, including a defense request to dismiss the case entirely based on allegations of investigator misconduct, and a claim raised by defense attorneys regarding a possible connection between weapons from the Murdaugh case and a recent homicide in Allendale County.
