Alex Murdaugh retrial faces probe into alleged crime scene cover-up

Following the South Carolina Supreme Court's decision to overturn Alex Murdaugh’s double murder conviction, investigators are probing allegations of a crime scene cover-up involving the deaths of Maggie and Paul Murdaugh.

The South Carolina Law Enforcement Division (SLED) and a statewide grand jury, led by prosecutor Creighton Waters, are reportedly investigating claims of crime scene manipulation. Subpoenas have been issued as part of the probe, including one to Yemasmee Police Chief Greg Alexander, a long-time friend of Murdaugh. Witnesses have reportedly testified to seeing the murder weapons—which have not been recovered—in Alexander's possession, though his lawyer has dismissed these claims as ‘absurd.’

The original case involved the June 2021 shooting deaths of Maggie Murdaugh and her son, Paul, at the family’s ‘Moselle’ hunting lodge. The investigation into the murders follows a history of legal scrutiny surrounding the Murdaugh family, including a 2019 fatal boating accident involving Paul Murdaugh.
