Alex Ovechkin Washington Capitals NHL retirement Dynamo Moscow hockey

Alex Ovechkin has announced that the 2026-27 NHL season will be his final campaign. The Washington Capitals captain, who is the league's all-time leading goal scorer, stated he made the decision alongside his family. His final NHL season will mark his 22nd year with the Capitals.

During a recent home opener, Ovechkin was introduced to the crowd by his sons, Sergei and Ilya. The event served as a precursor to his planned departure from the league.

Despite his NHL retirement plans, NHL insider David Pagnotta suggests Ovechkin's professional hockey career may continue. Pagnotta anticipates that Ovechkin will eventually return to Dynamo Moscow in the KHL to finish his career. Ovechkin has previously expressed a desire to play his final professional game for the club where he began his career.
