Alex Ovechkin continues NHL goals record pursuit
Alex Ovechkin is continuing his pursuit of the NHL all-time goals record during the 2024-25 season. Despite his age, the Washington Capitals captain has maintained high production, though his campaign was significantly interrupted by a fractured left fibula sustained during a collision with Jack McBain on November 18, 2024.
Before the injury, Ovechkin was on a career-high pace, having scored 15 goals in his first 18 games. The injury left him at 868 goals, 27 shy of Wayne Gretzky’s record. Following the fracture, Ovechkin focused on a rapid recovery, with former teammate TJ Oshie noting the player's quick return to walking shortly after the incident.
As Ovechkin nears 41 years old, speculation regarding his potential retirement has increased. Having signed a one-year contract with the Capitals, discussions have emerged regarding whether he might participate in a farewell tour or follow the example of Wayne Gretzky by announcing his retirement shortly before his final game.
