Alex Ovechkin's farewell ceremony draws criticism and protests

Alex Ovechkin Washington Capitals Dominik Hasek NHL pregame ceremony

During the Washington Capitals' home opener against the Pittsburgh Penguins at Capital One Arena, Alex Ovechkin's sons, Sergei and Ilya, introduced their father to the ice. The ceremony served as a tribute for Ovechkin's final home season, following his recent announcement that the 2026-27 season would be his last.

The ceremony drew significant criticism from legendary goaltender Dominik Hasek. Hasek alleged that the Capitals and the NHL “knowingly exploited” Ovechkin’s children to support Russian interests, citing Ovechkin’s past public support for Vladimir Putin. Hasek described the decision as “absolutely atrocious.”

Additionally, pro-Ukraine demonstrators gathered outside the arena to protest Ovechkin’s involvement in a promotional video for United Russia, the political party aligned with the Russian presidency.
