Josef Newgarden wins IndyCar St. Louis race after close duel

Team Penske driver Josef Newgarden secured victory at the 2026 IndyCar St. Louis (Gateway) race, finishing 0.66 seconds ahead of Marcus Ericsson, who recorded his best result of the season. Christian Rasmussen completed the podium in third place.

Alex Palou earned pole position with a record‑breaking lap of 174.353 mph, but a fuel‑strategy error caused him to fall to 17th after a late‑race pit stop. In free practice, Christian Lundgaard posted the fastest time, edging Scott Dixon by three hundredths of a second.

Brazilian rookie Caio Collet impressed by leading several laps and climbing from a 20th‑grid start to contend for the lead before his engine failed near the end of the race, leaving him 11th. The event featured 268 overtakes, a new circuit record, and multiple weather‑related interruptions, including two red‑flag periods caused by rain.

The race marked Newgarden’s sixth win in eleven starts on short ovals, reinforcing his reputation as a specialist on this track type.
