Alex Pearce avoids surgery after Grand Final Achilles injury

Fremantle captain Alex Pearce has avoided a worst-case scenario following scans on an injury sustained during the AFL Grand Final against Brisbane at the Melbourne Cricket Ground.

Club executive general manager of football Joe Brierty confirmed that scans revealed a partial tear of Pearce's right Achilles tendon and a significant calf strain. While there were initial fears the injury could sideline him for much of the 2027 season, the club stated that Pearce will not require surgery and is expected to return to training during the pre-season.

The injury occurred during the third quarter of the match, which resulted in a loss for the Dockers. The club's performance health team is currently consulting with specialists to determine the specific timeline for his rehabilitation program.
