Cuiabá court hands 33‑year prison term to executor of OAB lawyer murder
The Tribunal do Júri in Cuiabá sentenced Alex Roberto de Queiroz Silva to 33 years and 10 months of imprisonment in a closed regime for the murder of Renato Nery, former president of the Mato Grosso Bar Association. Silva was convicted of qualified homicide, procedural fraud and participation in a criminal organization. During the trial he admitted firing the fatal shots and said he accepted the contract because he was in debt, describing a payment of about R$ 200 000 offered by a friend.
Investigations linked the killing to a dispute over a large rural property, implicating businessmen Julinere Bentos Goulart and César Jorge Sechi as the alleged masterminds and several military police officers as intermediaries. The conviction also includes an eight‑month detention term for procedural fraud and a fine of 40 minimum wages payable to Nery’s family.
