Alex Tsipras clashes with SYRIZA over private university reforms

A political confrontation has emerged around Greece’s article 16 of the Constitution, which governs private universities. Alex Tsipras and his supporters have reaffirmed opposition to any amendment, arguing that preserving the public character of higher education is a core policy stance. SYRIZA leaders have turned the debate into a broader political clash, accusing Tsipras of undermining the party’s agenda.

The dispute expanded when New Democracy MP Marizeta Antonopoulou confronted ELAS official Sophia Voultepsi, a close associate of Tsipras, over agricultural subsidies, alleged patronage networks, and past government appointments. Antonopoulou charged the right‑wing parties with fostering cronyism, while Voultepsi defended SYRIZA’s record and pointed to investigations into illegal subsidies. Both sides exchanged accusations about the use of public funds and the influence of personal networks in government decisions.
