Alexander Afenyo-Markin accuses EOCO of political persecution

Ghanaian Minority Leader Alexander Afenyo-Markin has accused the Economic and Organised Crime Office (EOCO) of selective justice and political persecution following the detention of Manhyia South MP Nana Agyei Baffour Awuah.

Mr. Baffour Awuah reported to EOCO headquarters to assist with an investigation into alleged unauthorized financial transactions involving SIC Life Savings and Loans. The investigation includes suspicions of money laundering and the dissipation of public funds, though these allegations have not been determined by a court. Afenyo-Markin criticized the agency for its handling of the lawmaker, describing the actions as an attempt to intimidate opposition voices.

The Minority Leader further challenged EOCO and the Narcotics Control Commission (NACOC) to shift their focus toward dismantling international drug trafficking networks. He cited intelligence regarding massive cocaine and methamphetamine seizures in locations such as Amsterdam, Dunkirk, and Australia that were linked to Ghanaian shipments. Afenyo-Markin questioned why security agencies have not shown similar zeal in pursuing the financiers and organizers of these narcotics networks.
