Alexander Afenyo-Markin attributes NPP election loss to economic policies
Alexander Afenyo-Markin, the Minority Leader of Parliament, has acknowledged that the New Patriotic Party (NPP) lost the 2024 elections due to economic dissatisfaction. In an interview with DW Africa, he stated that the Akufo-Addo administration's handling of Ghana's economic crisis directly influenced voter behavior.
Afenyo-Markin specifically cited the domestic debt exchange programme and the decision to seek a bailout from the International Monetary Fund (IMF) as key factors that left many Ghanaians dissatisfied. He noted that some voters chose to punish the government at the polls, while others opted not to vote at all.
Separately, Techiman South MP Korsah Adjei-Mensah Martin defended the NPP's record during a demonstration, arguing that the party remains the best manager of the country. He criticized the current government for incompetence and alleged irregularities regarding funds used for evacuating Ghanaians from South Africa.
