Alexander Afenyo-Markin criticizes NDC over accountability standards

Minority Leader and Effutu MP Alexander Afenyo-Markin has accused the governing National Democratic Congress (NDC) of adopting double standards regarding government accountability. He stated that the party must accept the same level of scrutiny it demanded of the previous New Patriotic Party (NPP) administration during its eight years in opposition.

The criticism follows a political debate concerning GH₵49.72 million spent on the evacuation of 1,964 Ghanaians from South Africa. Afenyo-Markin argued that the NDC previously taught citizens that questioning the government was an act of patriotism, yet the party now appears offended when those same principles are applied to its own administration.

He maintained that public office is a public trust and that questioning government contracts or expenditures is a legitimate part of democratic oversight rather than a personal or political attack.
