Alexander Afenyo-Markin sues GoldBod CEO over extortion allegations
Ghanaian Minority Leader Alexander Afenyo-Markin has initiated legal proceedings against Sammy Gyamfi, CEO of the Ghana Gold Board (GoldBod), and Multimedia Group Limited. The lawsuits, filed in the Accra High Court and Achimota Circuit Court, seek GH¢15 million in compensation and a public apology following allegations that Gyamfi labeled the lawmaker an “extortionist” during a televised program.
The dispute stems from Afenyo-Markin’s parliamentary oversight regarding a reported US$1.7 billion loss within the Bank of Ghana’s Domestic Gold Purchase Programme. While the Minority Leader has demanded accountability for these losses, Gyamfi has rejected the claims and leveled the extortion accusations against him.
The Office of the Special Prosecutor (OSP) has confirmed it is assessing the matter. The agency has received three petitions concerning the allegations and is determining if the claims fall within its statutory mandate to investigate corruption and financial crimes. Afenyo-Markin has stated he is prepared to cooperate with any formal investigation to clear his name.
