Alexander Blockx reaches US Open quarterfinals after defeating Francisco Cerúndolo
Alexander Blockx has made history by becoming the first Belgian man to reach the US Open quarterfinals. The 21-year-old, seeded 28th, secured his place after a grueling four-set victory (6-3, 4-6, 7-5, 7-5) against Argentina’s Francisco Cerúndolo at Arthur Ashe Stadium.
Cerúndolo, ranked 25th, saw his tournament run end in the round of 16. Despite a strong second set, the Argentine struggled with precision, failing to convert 14 of his 17 break point opportunities. The match was also marked by high tension, as Cerúndolo was seen shouting frustrations at his coaching staff, including former Olympic champion Nicolás Massú, during the third set.
Blockx, who battled through physical discomfort including rib pain, will advance to face the winner of the match between Karen Khachanov and Learner Tien. With Cerúndolo’s exit, Argentina no longer has representatives in the men's singles draw following the earlier elimination of Tomás Etcheverry.
