Alexander Choupenitch Becomes First Czech Male World Fencing Champion

On 27 July 2026 in Hong Kong, Czech foil fencer Alexander Choupenitch defeated Italy’s Filipp Macchi 15‑2 to win the men’s World Championship. The victory makes him the first Czech man to claim a world title in fencing and adds to his 2021 Olympic bronze and multiple European medals.

Choupenitch attributed the triumph to 23 years of consistent work, saying, "It’s definitely the biggest achievement of my career." After a shaky start, including a loss in a training bout and a difficult quarter‑final against Russia’s Jegor Barannikov, he improved throughout the event and also secured the overall World Cup ranking, marking a historic breakthrough for Czech fencing.
