Alexander Hoffmann opposes including politicians in pension insurance

Alexander Hoffmann, the CSU parliamentary group leader, has expressed opposition to including federal and state parliament members in the statutory pension insurance system. While a government-appointed pension reform commission recommends that both self-employed individuals and politicians contribute to the system, Hoffmann argues that such a move would create multiple parallel systems for decades without solving the underlying pension issues.

Instead of direct integration, Hoffmann supports an approach where any austerity measures, increases in the retirement age, or reductions in pension benefits applied to the general public are automatically and equally applied to the retirement benefits of politicians. He emphasized that maintaining the attractiveness of parliamentary mandates is essential for democracy, ensuring that individuals, including the self-employed, remain willing to serve in office.

Currently, parliamentarians receive state-funded old-age compensation based on their length of service rather than paying into the statutory pension fund. While the SPD supports the commission's recommendation, debates continue regarding the implementation of the original agreement between Chancellor Friedrich Merz and former Labor Minister Bärbel Bas.
