Aleksander Barkov placed on LTIR following injury in Panthers loss
The San Jose Sharks defeated the Florida Panthers 4-3 in overtime during their season opener at the SAP Center. Luca Cagnoni scored his first NHL goal in the extra period to secure the win for San Jose. The Sharks took an early 3-0 lead with goals from Mason Marchment and Will Smith, but the Panthers rallied in the third period through Eetu Luostarinen and Matthew Tkachuk to force overtime.
During the game, Florida Panthers captain Aleksander Barkov suffered a left leg injury after an awkward fall during a battle along the boards. Barkov, who missed the entire previous season due to knee surgery, was visibly frustrated and left the ice immediately. The Panthers have since placed Barkov on long-term injured reserve (LTIR), meaning he will miss at least 10 games and 24 days, though the severity of the injury remains under evaluation following an MRI.
Barkov's absence has sparked speculation regarding potential roster moves, including rumors of the Panthers pursuing Detroit Red Wings center Dylan Larkin to fill the void at center. The injury is a significant blow to the Panthers' championship aspirations, especially given their tight salary cap situation.
