Alexander Ovechkin announces retirement as Albert Smits rises in NHL

Alexander Ovechkin, the NHL's all-time leading goal scorer, has announced that the current season will be the final one of his career. The 41-year-old, who has recorded 929 goals—surpassing Wayne Gretzky's previous record of 894—shared the decision with his family this summer. He expressed a desire to thank those who supported him throughout his career before his final season with the Washington Capitals.

In other NHL news, Latvian defenseman Albert Smits has emerged as a notable rookie for the New York Rangers. Smits, the youngest defenseman in the league, recently participated in a New York derby where the Rangers defeated the Islanders 5-2. Following the start of the regular season, Smits was ranked among the top ten NHL rookies in an expert poll, securing ninth place.

The Rangers have recently secured three consecutive victories, placing them at the top of the Eastern Conference after four games played.
